How it started
In November of 2002, Kevin and 4 friends from London participate in La Ruta in Costa Rica and conceives the idea for a mountain bike stage race in South Africa. Then in March 2004, inaugural Cape Epic is completed successfully.
8 days. The race is held over 8 days and includes a time-trial prologue.
Most stages are around 100k long with 2000m climbing. There is a time trial stage, which is much shorter (like 30k.)
Be sure to include number of stages, overall mileage, typical mileage per day, etc.
The Absa Cape Epic passes through very dry and very hot areas of South Africa.
The route leads mountain bikers through approximately 800 kilometres of the unspoilt nature of the Western Cape and up approximately 16,000m of climbing over some of the most magnificent passes in South Africa.
The route of the Absa Cape Epic changes every year and riders will see wide open African plains, majestic mountains, deep ravines, indigenous forests, spectacular coastlines and flourishing vineyards.
The route is characterized by dusty and demanding gravel paths, strenuous rocky uphills, thrilling technical downhills, magnificent river crossings, and stunning forested single tracks.
