How it started:
“17 years ago Roman Urbina read about the Spanish Explorer Juan de Cavallón and his 20 years journey through the treacherous mountains of Costa Rica, in his attempt to explore the area. Urbina, a recognized Costa Rican athlete and adventurer, decided to retrace that long voyage.
Roman -and 34 other brave journeyman- started the trip across Costa Rica’s rugged terrain, an adventure that led them to cross several lavish rain forests, majestic active volcanoes, spectacular mountain ranges and roaring rivers. This adventure turned into an epic annual event, known to all as La Ruta de los Conquistadores.”
Race overview:
4-day stage race
starts on the Pacific Coast and finishes on the Caribbean.
Be sure to include number of stages, overall mileage, typical mileage per day, etc.

Jungle and rainforest type area.
Mountains. Steep climbs and descents. There are many “hike a bike” sections on the steep uphills and you should train to walk up steep climbs along with your regular riding training.

Important Rules:
No refunds.
Strictly enforced time limits at each checkpoint of the day’s stage as well as the finish line. (If you miss the time limit, you can still ride the next day, you just won’t be in the race standings.)

Pricing: $550 or $1650. Cheaper package apparently doesn’t include breakfast or lodging.

Lodging
options include hotels. You are in a hotel each night, double occupancy. You have the option to choose your roommate.
You get a sports bag to transfer your clothing and gear to the new hotel each night. Everything must fit in this one bag. Your bike is stored in a secure facility each night.
